I was born in Cork in 1963, adopted in February 1964. I approached my adoption agency in 1982 in an attempt to find out something about my origins, or whether my natural mother would like some contact with me. My confidence was breached by the secretary of the agency who approached my natural grandmother instead of my natural mother and told her that I had been in contact. That nun/agency secretary accepted my natural grandmother’s attitude that they should “let sleeping dogs lie” and that her “daughter was getting on with her life”. The nun also denied having any information at all about me. I found out in 1989 that my natural mother had died, that the agency had known this since 1987. I wrote again and the agency would tell me nothing. Eventually with the help of people in Adoption Rights Alliance I found out about my natural mother, that she had died in 1985 in London, always hoping that I would get in touch, and never having been told that I’d been trying since 1982 to have some form of contact, even if just to say “hello” over a cup of coffee. In 2001 I wrote yet again to the adoption agency and this time some information was forthcoming, simple but yet profoundly special information such as my weight at birth, time of birth, duration of labour, and some basic notes about my health after my birth. All information the existence of which had previously been denied by the very same adoption agency. I found my natural mother’s final resting place in 2002 in London and subsequently established a very happy contact with members of my natural family. I have been living in London since April 1985. My natural mother died in August 1985. At one stage I was living only TWO ROADS AWAY from her. And yet these people would not try to contact her directly to determine if she wanted contact. Because she did. And it might have changed how she spent the last 4 months of her life. Minister Barry Andrews needs to stop being so selfish and supportive of the evil secrecy which leads to other people experiencing what I experienced!

I find it strange that I can get information on the meat in my freezer back to the day it was born but can't access my own information. It's time to face up to our past.

I was listening to your discussion on the radio. For me the truth is that no matter how much women talk about equality and play it offended when men stair at their 'crisps', it actually makes us feel good. For example why would you wear a deep cleavage if not to show off what you have. A compliment or a look can definitely boost up your confidence. The add is just a picture of what happens on the street every day.
