Halsey was homeless at 19-years-old
MailOnline reports Halsey had previously revealed her parents kicked her out after she dropped out of college at 19-years-old.
The 24-year-old was honoured at the 'Ending Youth Homelessness' benefit over the weekend.
Here, she opened up about the struggles she faced on the streets of New York.

She said, 'when I was living in New York, I was a teenager.'
'My friends were picking out decorations for their dorms...'
'I was debating on whether or not I should let a stranger inside of me so I could pay for my next meal.'

'It wasn't because I did something bad, it wasn't because something was wrong with me...'
'It wasn't because my parents didn't love me because they did very much...'
'A series of unfortunate circumstances lead me to being in that position and it can happen to absolutely anyone.'

Halsey however, doesn't want people to help the homeless just because they might one day be famous.
'We shouldn't help because we think there's a chance they could turn into a celebrity.'
'We shouldn't help because they could really make something of themselves, because they are something right now.'

How Halsey shot to fame
Halsey previously opened up to Rolling Stone about her journey to success.
She recalled a time when she had only $9 in her account and chose to spend it on energy drinks to keep her awake overnight.
'It was less dangerous to not sleep than it was to sleep somewhere random and maybe get raped or kidnapped.'

Halsey later found herself invited to a party at a Holiday Inn in Newark.
During the evening, she met a, 'music guy who invited her to his house to maybe do some sort of collaboration.'
'It was the first time I’d ever been in a studio, and by ‘studio’ I mean someone’s basement that had a microphone and recording equipment.'

It was here that she wrote her song Ghost.
A few weeks later, she shared the song on SoundCloud and it took off.
'Her Twitter account was blowing up.'
Now, Halsey is a Grammy nominee with two Billboard number one songs.
