Lewis Capaldi shares the inspiration behind Someone You Loved

Lewis Capaldi has revealed his hit single Someone You Loved is not about his ex Paige Turley.

He dated the Love Island contestant for about a year while they were in college.

Lewis says the track is actually about his late grandmother.

It was reported last November that the song was written about Paige after they split.

Alleged friends of the hit-maker told The Sun, 'The song and his album is clearly inspired by love and he loved her...'

'Paige dated Lewis while they were both at college from around 2014 to 2016.'

In her Love Island VT, Paige addresses these reports, "They think the song was about me."

She says, "The song was called Someone You Loved."

Paige jokes, "If that's the case - Lewis I'm so sorry."

Lewis reveals the story behind the song

However, in a new interview with V Music Australia, Lewis reveals the song is not about an ex.

He says, 'The song is not about a lady who I was in a romantic relationship with, it's about my grandmother, who is dead.'

Lewis adds, 'F**k.'

The singer explains, 'She died a few years ago, your classic death, do you know what I mean? Not coming back sort of thing.'

Someone You Loved was the last song Lewis wrote for his album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent.

'I was kind of writing for the album and I thought the album was finished and I had this little thing in my head like, "you could try just doing one more."'

Writing the song

He goes on, 'And I did try and do one more for like three months and nothing was coming and then one day I sat at my piano, after the death, and I sat down and started messing around.'

Lewis explains, 'That's why the piano part's so simple, because I can't play anything else, bing bing bing bing, that's it.'

The singer continues, 'I got all the melodies down for it but I couldn't think of any lyrics, so I was like oh well, I'll just wait for the second album and I'll put it on the second album.'

Lewis adds, 'Thank f**k I never did that, because my career would have been an absolute f**king tail spin. I would have flopped hard.'

'Then I went into a session with friends of mine called TMS and a guy called Romans and I was like: "I've got this but I can't write another heartbreak ballad."'

'And as fortune had it, my gran had just died. As luck would have it, they said "Have you lost anybody?", and I says, "Just the ticket, my gran's dead!"'
