According to a biography of the producer Sherry Lansing, she thought the song was too 'corny' (according to The Hollywood Reporter).
Not only that, but Jim Cameron apparently become concerned with the spiralling budget of the film that it nearly featured on a list of cuts, despite being a fan of the song.
Thankfully, producers and Jim both saw sense and it became iconic tune we all remember.
