Penn Badgley on the attraction towards his character in YOU
Penn Badgley has become somewhat of a heartthrob since his role as creepy stalker Joe Goldberg in YOU.
Many people have said they find the character extremely attractive despite the fact he's a killer.
In a new interview with Stephen Colbert, Penn gives his thoughts on this.
If you're one of those people who finds Joe attractive then fear not - Penn says it's not your fault.
"It's not entirely fair to put that on the viewer because we're purposefully creating a device that is meant to be provocative."
"Hopefully thought provoking and not just titillating. It's not a clinical portrayal of a serial killer."
He makes a very interesting point when asked what he thinks the viewer's reaction says about our society.
"It says something about how much we are willing to be patient and forgive someone who inhabits a body that looks something like mine."
Penn explains further, "The colour of my skin, my gender, these sorts of things. These sorts of privileges."
"And how much less willing to forgive people who don't fit those boxes," he says as the audience applaud him.
The presenter asks Penn about his ability to go from charming to creepy in an instance.
The actor reveals it's a, "shockingly simple," thing to do. He tells Stephen that the trick is to simply do nothing.
