Reese Witherspoon talks to Regina King
Reese Witherspoon has revealed she never knew what homosexuality was until she moved to L.A.
She made the revelation during a chat with Regina King on Variety's Actors on Actors issue.

Reese stars in the new TV series Little Fires Everywhere, which is set in Ohio in the 90s.
She told Regina that the show for her, was reminiscent of her teenage years.
In preparation for the lead role of Elena, she tried to remember what the 90s were like.

The show made her question her beliefs growing up, "What did my mom say about sexuality, race, class?"
"What were the things that I was told that maybe were true or not true?"
She added, "How was I insensitive?"

"I didn’t understand what homosexuality was"
At this point in the interview, the actress revealed, "No one spoke to me about sexuality when I was a teenager."
"I didn’t understand what homosexuality was."
"My grandparents didn’t explain it; my parents didn’t explain it."

Reese shared that she didn't know what homosexuality was until she moved to L.A.
She said, "I had to learn from somebody I met on an audition in Los Angeles."
The actress had a conversation with her grandmother about homosexuality after the fact.

Reese's grandmother told her, "Homosexuality is very rare, Reese. That’s not a thing that happens very often."
The actress incorporated this part of their conversation into the Little Fires Everywhere script.
"Elena says it because that’s what was said to me in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1994," she explained.
