Ricky Gervais hits back
Over the weekend, Ricky Gervais made a very controversial speech as part of hosting duties at the 2020 Golden Globes.
In the monologue, he makes fun of pretty much every celebrity in the room.
Some viewers found it offensive and he's letting them know he doesn't care.
In his speech, Ricky takes aim at Leonardo DiCaprio, Dame Judi Dench and even Meryl Streep.
"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - nearly three hours long!"
"Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere and by the end his date was too old for him."
He even referenced the new Netflix movie The Two Popes in a list of, "pedophile movies."
"It was a big year for pedophile movies: Surviving R. Kelly, Leaving Neverland, The Two Popes!"
The camera panned to Jonathan Pryce's face and he clearly didn't find it funny.
Social media and online reaction
While many found Ricky's monologue hilarious, others weren't quite as impressed.
Some even considered his speech as being very right wing.
And the comedian has made it clear that he really doesn't care what people think.
Ricky takes to Twitter to comment on the reaction.
'I always knew that there were morons in the world that took jokes seriously, but I'm surprised that some journalists do.'
'Surely, understanding stuff is pretty fundamental to their job, isn't it? Just makes it funnier though, I guess'
He tweets again, '1. Simply pointing out whether someone is left or right wing isn't winning the argument.'
'2. If a joke is good enough, it can be enjoyed by anyone. 3. It's not all about you.'
'4. Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right.'
In another post, he continues, 'I didn't roast Hollywood for being a bunch of liberals. I myself am a liberal.'
'Nothing wrong with that. I roasted them for wearing their liberalism like a medal.'
'I'm such a snowflake, liberal, I can't even really hate them for it. But my job is to take the piss. I did that.'
