Bob The Drag Queen chats to SPIN

SPIN's Sarina Bellissimo caught up with Drag Race star Bob The Drag Queen for a chat recently.

They talked about his success, performing on stage and Pride Month.

Sarina kicked off the interview by asking him how it feels suddenly becoming famous.

He admitted he is, "a little used to it," but also, "a little shocked," that his Drag Race success is still prevalent.

The SPIN presenter encouraged him by reminding him he took home the crown so he'll go down in history.

Sarina wanted to know if anything about the show shocked him when he first appeared on it.

He said the one thing that really stood out was the intensity of it all.

"When they say long days, you don't know how long, when they say emotionally taxing, you don't know how taxing."

The star added, "Whatever you expect, just multiply it."

Stage experience

Later in the interview, the pair talk about his stage experience, and how Drag wasn't his first time performing in front of an audience.

He revealed he did theatre in school, "I did high school plays, I had a short lived career as a Slam Poet..."

"I had quite a bit of a history with performing," he revealed.

"But something about Drag, I really thought to myself, I've never been this good at anything."

"This really highlights all of my best assets, like this really is everything that I'm really, really great at."

The Drag community

Bob went on to talk about how the Drag community in New York City really accepted him.

"You're in there and everything you're good at, they just lift you up... root for you and cheer for you and they want you to win."

Sarina added that she wishes we could sprinkle the world with some Drag!

With June being Pride Month, Sarina asked what Pride means to him.

He replied, "I will never forget being in Chelsea, I think it was Pride of like 2013 or something..."

Bob was working in a bar at the time, when a man approached him during karaoke night.

Pride

The man told him, "This is the only time of year that me and my partner get to hold hands in public."

"Where we live we have to be closeted and we never get to address our love to each other ever."

"So it just means so much to me, to be here, singing karaoke with you. And that was like nine years ago."

Bob went on to chat about where transphobia and homophobia comes from.

He said, "The root of those is really based in toxic masculinity often in my opinion, which often boils down to misogyny a lot of the time."

The Drag star added that not everyone in the LGBT+ community feels comfortable at Pride.

He explained, "Because there seems to be a vibe that pride is just for cis-gay guys and that's not the case."

"Pride is for anyone under the core umbrella who wants to celebrate their existence"

Sarina also spoke to Bob The Drag Queen about his show We're Here and what we can expect from season two.
