The Red Bull Flugtag has been running for 27 years.
For those who don't know, the event involves building a homemade flying machine and then diving off a pier in it.

Except the idea is to actually take flight.
While most teams are ridiculously unsuccessful some competitors actually manage to become airborne and in 2013 a world record was broken.
The Chicken Whisperers entered the Flugtag on Long Beach in California and in front of a crown of 110,000 their contraption soared an astonishing 78.5 meters.
That's length of 261.6 chickens in an orderly line, in case you were wondering.
They beat the previous record by 9 meters. Watch for yourself:
