Individual Racism
Speak Up on SPIN is a brand new content series that aims to tackle important issues that exist in Irish society.
Our first topic is racism and each week we'll bring you a new informative video.
This week we're learning about individual racism.
When you think about racism you’re likely to picture instances of abuse, people using racial slurs, and reports of hate crimes.
All of these things fall under the banner of individual racism.
Individual racism includes micro-aggressions, discrimination, stereotyping, hate crimes and hate speech.
Asking someone where are they are really from is a micro aggression.
Not renting a room to someone for fear their ethnic cooking will devalue your property is discrimination.
Assuming a minority group is more likely to cause crime in your neighbourhood is stereotyping.
Attacking someone or damaging their property because their heritage is different to yours is a hate crime.
Using hateful language and slurs is hate speech.
Individual racism is prevalent in Ireland.
You’ve likely witnessed or experienced it at some point in your day-to-day life.
If you see it, report it. You can do so in confidence at iReport.ie
