Ava DuVernay
Ava told Sarina that one reason she wanted to tell Colin's story was because of her interest in "how we could use the beautiful experiences of his early life to illuminate larger, cultural, historical truths."
"What we created is something a little off the beaten path," she said. "It's not just the story of him as a boy, it's a story of what him as a boy means in a larger sense."

Ava called directing the series a "beautiful challenge" as she worked to find ways to weave the narrative of Colin's youth in with present day.
"We break out from the story [from Colin as a young man] and we get into Colin in the present day as he's narrating all these other pieces of the story."
Mary Louise Parker
Sarina chatted with from Mary Louise Parker, who plays Colin's mother in the series.
Mary Louise discusses how she trusts her power and understand that "every day is a new set of challenges."
Jaden Michael
Sarina also spoke with Jaden Michael, who plays a young Colin Kaerpernick, about the moment he got the call from Ava to say he got the role.
He said he got off the phone and "started screaming," and then his entire family started screaming along with him with no idea what they were excited about.
Colin In Black & White is on Netflix now.
