The Academy tweak the rules for 2021 Oscars
The Academy have announced a change in the rules for the 2021 Oscars.
For this awards year only, streamed movies will be allowed to participate.
The announcement comes as cinemas continue to shut down across the world amid the pandemic.
The Academy made the announcement in a statement posted on their official website this week.
They made it clear that once theatres reopen, 'all films released thereafter,' must resort back to the original rules.
The Academy president & CEO
Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson released a statement.
They said, 'The Academy firmly believes there is no greater way to experience the magic of movies than to see them in a theater.'
'Our commitment to that is unchanged and unwavering.'
They went on, 'Nonetheless, the historically tragic COVID-19 pandemic necessitates this temporary exception to our awards eligibility rules.'
'The Academy supports our members and colleagues during this time of uncertainty.'
'We recognise the importance of their work being seen and also celebrated, especially now, when audiences appreciate movies more than ever.'
