Saoirse Ronan revealed the one role she's still sour about not winning in the early years of her career.

The 30-year-old movie star explained that there was one part that slipped away from her - and haunts her to this day.

That part was, of course, Luna Lovegood in the global phenomenon Harry Potter.

Snagged by fellow Irish actress Evanna Lynch, Luna was an Irish wizard attending Hogwarts with the famous trio - Harry, Hermione and Ron.

Saoirse opened up about her audition process during a chat with American host Jimmy Kimmel.

Speaking on his show Jimmy Kimmel Live! she said: "There are things that you’ll pass on and then they come out, and you think, ‘Oh God, that was a misstep on my part’, but I think the one that stayed with me over the years – I didn’t say no to it, I just didn’t get the part.

“I lost, again. It’s a running theme for me."

Saoirse continued: “I had gone up for Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter years ago, because it was, like, the Irish character, so they got everyone Irish in – like, half of Ireland to come and audition.

Luna was played by Evanna Lynch.

“And I knew I wasn’t going to get it because I was too young, but I got to read out a scene that was going to be in Harry Potter and it was the coolest thing ever.”

Th star was in America to promote her new movie The Outrun that's tipped to pick up plenty of nominations at next year's Oscars awards.

She plays Rona,  a young woman returning home to the Orkney Islands after completing a 90-day rehab programme for alcoholism.
