A third of children report they can go online whenever they want and two thirds say they've been contacted by a stranger in an online game.
A CyberSafeKids study shows a fifth of children surveyed have seen something online they wouldn't want their parents to know about.
The organisation surveyed almost 4,500 8 to 12-year-olds between September 2021 and June 2022.
Research assistant at DCU's Anti-Bullying Centre, Derek Laffan, says there are actions that can be taken over abusive or upsetting content:
"So my advice to a parent is, if you see that, you don’t let it go.
"You actually take that, you report it."
"If that is the case you report it to the Gardai."
"Or if action isn’t followed up in the school, if it does go into the school environment, you’re reporting it to them."
"But also to the Ombudsman for Children if it has to go that far."
