1,200 cycling and walking infrastructure projects are to be completed.
That's under funding from the National Transport Authority.
289 million euro will be made available to local authorities to complete almost 1,000 kilometers of new and improved bike lanes and paths.
The NTA says it will improve quality of life and help reduce carbon emissions.
CEO Anne Graham says many local authorities are currently in the design phase:
"Outside the GDA and in the smaller local authorities we're beginning to get designs done."
"So a lot of the work over the next year - particularly for those local authorities - on designs."
"Getting through planning permissions too, if they're required."
"Then in terms of the ones that are further ahead we'll be moving to construction."
"So there are some big projects now coming for construction this year."
The Salmon Weir Bridge in Galway is one example.
