There's no way of paying by phone on the bus network currently.
Contactless and smartphone payments on Dublin Bus could be possible 'late next year'.
That's according to the National Transport Authority as a response to calls for the method.
The NTA has launched a tendering process for the new system and is targeting late 2023 for the introduction.
Buses have become contactless through Leap cards, but many have asked for the feature to be made available for phones.

Sean Yates is a bus driver and chairman of the Dublin Branch of the National Bus and Rail Union.
He says it's good news for customers, tourists and especially drivers.
"Although it's a bit late coming to the game if you like," he said.
"We've had Singapore, the UK, Brazil, all way ahead of us in relation to this technology."
"The positives are it improves driver safety, it reduces dwell time by speeding up boarding."
