Covid-19: One Further Death And 687 Additional Cases

The Department of Health has confirmed one additional death linked to Covid-19, which occurred in January.

As of midnight last night, there have been 687 confirmed new cases of the virus.

Of today's cases, 71%  are under 45 years of age.

The median age is 30 years old.

Most of today's cases were identified in Dublin, where there are 240 new cases.

Elsewhere, there are 49 new cases in Limerick, 44 in Offaly, 40 in Galway and 36 in Louth.

The remaining 278 cases are spread across all other counties.

Meanwhile, there have been 14 additional hospitalisations in the past twenty-four hours.

In total, there are 540 Covid-19 patients in hospitals - 120 of whom are in intensive care.

The 14 Day incident rate is 209.2 per 100,000 population.

As of last Friday, 140,290 people have received both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

254,780 have been administered their first shot.

Hospital Admissions Down To Levels Seen In December

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer said today's number shows "progress".

"In the last 24 hours, we have had no new admissions to critical care, the first time this has happened since St. Stephen’s Day."

He said the figures are a "tangible signal" that the public's efforts are working to supress the spread of the virus.
