It comes as the government promised a bank holiday in recognition of frontline workers.

A double bank holiday around St Patrick's Day is being considered by the government.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar told RTÉ the 17th and 18th of March could both be Bank Holidays.

This would mean we could be shaping up for a four day weekend in March 2022.

He said from 2023 - the extra Bank Holiday may move to St Brigid's Day in February.

The news comes as Ireland falls well below the European average for public holidays.

This week the government has said they're not accepting new applicants for the Pandemic Unemployment Payment.

Opposition TDs have called for the move due to the curfew introduced to the hospitality sector last week.

Heather Humphreys, Minister for Social Protection, says the number of people signing on has reduced.

She has denied there'll be any move towards accepting new PUP applicants.
