Cases of fraud have driven up crime rates outside of Dublin in particular.
A 0.4 per cent decrease in crime nationwide might be seen as a positive step.
But it's the reduction in offences recorded in Dublin during 2021 that has swayed the nationwide polling.
Figures published by the CSO show a 6 per cent decrease in the crime rate in the city.

There were reductions in burglaries, public order offences and homicides.
However, sexual offences are up, as are breaches of court orders in the city.
There's also been a surge in cases of fraud, with Dublin suffering from an 82 per cent increase.
Only Wicklow and Meath recorded a similar drop-off rate to that in the capital in 2021.
