Instagram has unveiled a new suite of supervision tools for parents and guardians.
From the 30th of June, parents will be able to see how long a teen spends on the platform, schedule breaks in their usage, and see who they follow.
The new features are part of the Meta Family Centre, which aims to help parents navigate the ever-changing world of social media.
Tara Hopkins, Director of Public Policy at Instagram, explains why these tools are being introduced:
"I think what's important about the tool, is that we ran consultations with parents, young people and with experts. Hearing separately from each of these groups. To really understand what parents and teens alike really want to see from actually want to see from a parental supervision experience on Instagram".
Tara also says a certain level of privacy is important for young people:
"Supervision won't work if it's imposed upon a teenager. We really want to help and encourage offline discussions so that the parent and the teen can have a good supervisory experience. And it does allow for the parent to see some of the experiences their child is having on Instagram. But also allows for that young person to have a private experience on Instagram, and to have some autonomy in their social media".
