Logan Jackson, who murdered Limerick boxer Kevin Sheehy, is to be transferred to a British prison today.
The Department of Justice facilitated a request to transfer the criminal from Limerick to a jail in the UK.
Sheehy's family have spoken out about how they were informed of the transfer two months after the department signed off on it.
Limerick Fianna Fáil TD, Willie O'Dea, says the family are upset by the move.
"When you consider the barbarity of the crime and the devastation it has brought upon the family."
"The family are extremely upset at the idea, at the notion, that a benefit should be conferred on this murderer."
Kevin Sheehy
Mr Sheehy, a five-time Irish boxing champion, died after Jackson repeatedly ran over him with his jeep.
The prosecuting barrister, Dean Kelly, described in court last December how he "thundered" into him - such was the speed he was travelling at when he hit him.
He then rolled over his body two more times before fleeing the scene.
It happened just moments after a 90-second exchange outside a house party.
At Jackson's sentence hearing, Kevin's mother Tracey Tully told the court that her son was eagerly awaiting the birth of his first child at the time of his death.
She was born one month later.
