The head of the Irish Red Cross says they're seeing a number of reasons for people backing out of pledges to house Ukrainian refugees.

So far only around half of those who offered to home a refugee have responded when contacted by the Red Cross.

The majority of those who have answered calls have decided to proceed and take in people fleeing the war.

But Liam O'Dwyer, Secretary General of the Red Cross, says some have decided not to go ahead.

O'Dwyer made the point that people's circumstances could have changed, financially a family could have thought they had the means to support a Ukranian family but then upon scrutiny, they have had to reconsider.

Some may have committed initially to billeting a family and then realised that they could be housing Ukrainian nationals for a long time period such as six months.

He said that many pledges agreed and then talked to their family about it and decided to opt-out.

The secretary General also pointed out that many have taken in Refugees from the conflict without going through the Red Cross and thus, they are not showing up on the system.
