It's expected a murder investigation will be launched shortly after a prisoner died from injuries suffered in an attack at Mountjoy.

34 year old Robert O'Connor from Darndale in Dublin was assaulted in his cell on Friday.

Four other inmates have been identified as persons of interest but nobody has yet been arrested.

Brain Bleed

Chief Reporter at the Irish Mirror, John Hand, says gardai are waiting for the results of the pathologist's report:

"A post mortem's taking place today on the body of Robert O'Connor and it's expected the investigation will be upgraded to murder."

"He was pronounced dead in the early hours of this morning at the Mater Hospital, where he has been since Friday, in intensive care."

"Earlier that evening, before 6pm, he was viciously attacked by four inmates in a cell on the C2 landing of Mountjoy Prison."

"The injuries he sustained were so bad, he was suffering from a bleed on his brain, he was never expected to survive."

"So the decision was made this morning to turn off the life support machine."
