Only one dog poo fine has been issued in Dublin city so far this year.
While zero fines were given out last year compared to 84 in 2016.
Cabra Councillor Colm O'Rourke received the information from the city council and he is calling for a crackdown on dog fouling.
DCC says litter wardens are not actively patrolling areas to monitor the issue due to Covid-19.
The information released to Cllr Colm O’Rourke shows that the one fine issued so far in 2020 is compared to 0 fines issued in 2019, 4 fines in 2018, 24 in 2017, 84 in 2016 and 28 in 2015.
Cllr. O’Rourke said: “Dog fouling continues to be a big issue in the areas I represent and it is something that residents really want to be tackled."
“I think that the main reason why there is so much dog faeces on paths and in parks comes down to ignorance from some dog owners and handlers who unfortunately continue to ignore that it is an offence to allow a dog under their control to foul a public place."
"I appeal to dog owners and handlers to please clean up after their dog."
“I am confident that increased detection and stricter enforcement would help with this problem."
"I also think that there should be more public bins in areas where they are lacking but I really do believe that stricter enforcement is the key and I am calling on Dublin City Council to ensure that this happens.”
