The latest statistics come from the CSO.
Over a fifth of new cars being licensed in Ireland are electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
It makes up nearly 12,000 licences so far this year, according to the latest CSO figures.
There's been a 76 per cent increase in new electric vehicle ownership, compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile used car licenses are declining, suffering a 37 per cent drop from figures in 2021.
The number of diesel cars being licensed has also dropped by 7 per cent from last year.
Volkswagen is the most popular new car brand, followed by Toyota, Kia and Skoda.
