Parking Charges Around The City Centre To Go Up

Parking around Dublin's city centre could be set to get a little more expensive from next July.

Parking fees in the yellow and red zones of the city will go up as part of Dublin City Council's annual budget.

The proposals would see the yellow zone rate go from €2.90 to €3.20 an hour. Meanwhile, the red zone rates will rise 20c from €2.40 to €2.60.

Parking hikes

According to the Council CEO Owen Keegan, it plans to put the extra revenue into transport services:

"In a full financial year these measures will generate additional income of €3.0m, all of which will fund transport related services.

He added: "I have provided for the introduction of these changes with effect from 1st July 2019."

Motoring lobby groups, like the AA, haven't welcomed the news of the changes.

"This is essentially just a grab," says  The AA's Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan.

"The notion that it will be spent on transport is just fanciful. Really, that is just pure spin.

"I'm afraid as a promise that no value whatsoever and as a reason for taking money of your wallet, it just doesn't stack up."
