Dublin's new Pelletstown Station opened today, and will sit between the Ashtown and Broombridge stations on the Maynooth - M3 Parkway line.

The station will improve connectivity between the Ashington and Royal Canal Park communities, serving locals in Dublin 7.

Trains will take as few as 12 minutes to reach the city centre, with 94 locomotives a day stopping there on weekdays.

New footbridges at the site are offering pedestrians and cyclists access to the Royal Canal Greenway, and will also include ramps for the mobility impaired and those travelling with small children.

Communications Manager at Irish Rail, Barry Kenny, says the opening is hugely important to the surrounding community:

"With 94 trains serving the station every day, it means that you're going to have options for public transport, 12 minutes to the city centre, that will really improve people's quality of life, accessibility to work, leisure and education."

Pelletstown is the 145th station in the network, and the first new one to open since Oranmore Co. Galway began service eight years ago.
