Michael D Higgins will be sworn in for his second term of office in a ceremony this evening at Dublin Castle.
After departing Áras an Uachtarain Mr Higgins will be greeted by the the Taoiseach, Ministers, members of the judiciary and the Oireachtas and various officials from North and South.
He will be sworn in for a second term after receiving an overwhelming mandate in last month's election.
He is the ninth President of Ireland and will become the fifth to serve a second term.
Mr Higgins will again accept his seal of office before briefly heading back to the Áras before a state reception.
His term as President lapsed at midnight meaning for all of today the role has been filled by a trio of vice-presidents - the Presidential Commission made up of the Chair's of the Dáil and Seanad and the Chief Justice.
That temporary arrangement comes to an end this evening when Michael D Higgins is sworn in.
It's also the first time the ceremony has been held in the evening in order to allow the President-elect and the Taoiseach to attend Armistice Day ceremonies in Dublin and Paris.
