Pubs can operate delivery and takeaway drinks because of a "lack of clarity" in licensing laws.
Neither practice is an infringement according to legal advice issued to Gardaí.
However customers must consume takeaway products more than 100m from the pub.
It is also illegal to drink alcohol in public areas.
Orders Must Be Placed At Licensed Premises
Brian Foley from the Vintners Federation of Ireland explains why questions were raised:
"The ambiguity comes about because of the unprecedented circumstances we find ourselves in."
"So the Gardaí were obviously incorrect in their application of the law, that's been clarified."
"But publicans are very clear about what they're doing."
"As long as they receive the order on the premises where the license is held they can then deliver the alcohol."
