Seven people have been charged with being involved in an attack that killed Irish peacekeeper Seán Rooney last month.

The 23-year-old was traveling in a UN convoy when it was attacked by a militant group in Lebanon, near the village of Al-Aqbiya, on December 14th.

Only one of the seven is in police custody after he was handed over to the Lebanese Army.

Private Rooney was buried with full military honours just before Christmas in Donegal, following his funeral mass in Louth.

Chief celebrant Fr. Derek Ryan told mourners: "When Seán was killed last week, it really did pierce the heart of his family and this close-hearted community, and even the town of Dundalk."

22-year-old, Trooper Shane Kearney was also injured in the attack, and he was flown home to Ireland by special medical evacuation aircraft to continue treatment for his injuries.

Both men were serving as part of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which is made up of some 10,000 peacekeepers.

UNIFIL has been deployed in the region since 1978 to act as a buffer between Lebanon and Israel, which remain technically in a state of war.
