Donald Trump announced coronavirus measures overnight

The US has issued a travel ban from mainland Europe due to concerns over coronavirus.

Ireland is NOT affected, as the Taoiseach meets Donald Trump later.

Trump addressed the nation last night, where he explained the drastic action:

"A large number of new clusters in the United States, were ceded by travellers from Europe," he said.

There have been around 1,300 cases of Covid-19 across the US, with 37 deaths.

"After consulting with our top government health officials, we will be suspending all travel from [mainland] Europe to the United States for the next 30 days," added President Trump.

The ban will be in place from tomorrow.

Coronavirus pandemic

It's the latest action towards containing the virus, which the World Health Organisation has called a 'pandemic'.

Donald Trump made the announcement ahead of a meeting with Leo Varadkar later, who will now be essentially representing all of Europe.

Also in response to the virus, the traditional shamrock ceremony between the Taoiseach and the President has been called off.

People travelling from Ireland will still be able to enter the United States, as well as the UK.
