James Corden on The Super League

James Corden went on a massive rant about the European Super League proposal on The Late Late Show in America this week.

He said it's, "The worst kind of greed that I have ever seen in sport."

What is the Super League?

12 of Europe's leading football clubs have teamed up to create a new midweek football competition.

Some of these clubs include Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.

The competition is called The European Super League and will rival the Champions League.

James Corden's rant

Many feel this move will massively impact the sport, including James.

He said in doing this, "they have changed a game that millions and millions of people across the world have grown up loving and adoring."

James explained, "You might think, understandably, that a European Super League with all of the best teams who compete in it every season sounds amazing, and it is... and it already exists."

The Champions League

He explained the Champions League to his American audience, "If any team in Europe has a brilliant season [regardless of size or popularity] they get into that competition."

"So if a major team has a bad season, they don't get into the competition and that's the point because it's a competition."

James believes this new Super League will kill, "hundreds of other football teams that compete with them and have competed with them many times over the years."

"[They're] disregarding the fanbase of their own teams who are devastated about these too because these aren't small teams."

The talk show host said he's, "heartbroken by the proposal."

He explained why: "the owners of these teams have displayed the worst kind of greed that I have ever seen in sport."

In order to explain it better to his American audience, he said, "it's like if Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, and Viola Davis go well, we'll always be nominated and there's one place for someone else, but we will always be nominated regardless of what films we're in."

James described the statements from the 12 owners announcing the proposal as, "disgusting."

He concluded, "Don't ever forget it was them, those owners, they took something so pure and so beautiful and they beat the love and the joy out of it and they did it for money."

James hasn't made any further comment.
