WhatsApp is currently a free app
Whatsapp is to introduce ads next year.
Facebook has confirmed the messaging app will feature ads at its annual Marketing Summit in the Netherlands.
It would work similar to Instagram Stories - with a 'swipe up' function if users want to find out more about them.
It's a free app, hence Facebook is keen to make money by selling advertising space.
In addition, the messaging app's co-founders believe ads shouldn't take up the space.
Jan Koum and Brian Acton have both left in recent years and have been critical of Facebook's attempts to monetise the app.
