The Food Safety Authority ordered ten companies to shut their doors last month.
That was including a food business operating from a barber shop with no facilities for maintaining hygiene and protecting the food.
Other issues identified include a live cockroach infestation in a kitchen, a dead rat in an open drain in a food store, frozen fish stored in a broken freezer.
It also discovered rat poo in a tub of hot chocolate powder.
The businesses are in Counties Dublin, Louth, Laois, and Meath.
Eleven Enforcement Orders served on food businesses in March.
