The Minister of State for Transport says learner drivers being unaccompanied could make the roads even more dangerous.

152 people have died on the roads so far this year according to the Garda website.

That means 2023 is approaching the entire figure for 2022, which saw a total of 155 deaths.

Learners

In some parts of the country, some learner drivers are waiting over 40 weeks for a driving test because of backlogs.

The Rural Independents group says people waiting for a test should be allowed to drive without a fully licensed driver while waiting.

However, Junior Minister Jack Chambers has poured cold water over the idea:

"I think an amnesty or allowing learners drive without an accompanying driver would undermine all road safety principles."

"It would fly in the face of trying to reform and improve road safety principles and legislation."

The Minister said the Government is working to tackle "unacceptable" delays for people waiting for a test.

That includes having increased the number of testers.
