New regulations around e-scooters could soon be law in Ireland.
A speed limit of 20 kilometres-per-hour, a maximum weight, a requirement for lights and an age limit of 16 are some of the proposed laws.
Junior Transport Minister Jack Chambers says those who don't comply with new electric scooter regulations, will be fined.
The legislation has now gone to the European Commission for review. The Commission must approve any changes before they can take effect.
Recent Incidents
The new regulation come after several incidents involving e-scooters over the last year.
In August, a man from Dundalk lost his life following a collision between a car and two e-scooters.
While in June, 18 year old Sean Murphy lost his life after the electric bike he was riding crashed into a pillar.
Currently in Europe, speed limits of 20-25 km/h are common.
While in Paris, e-scooters were banned with an overwhelming 90 per cent vote from the public.
Regulations for the use of e vehicles will be discussed at a meeting of the Road Safety Authority today.
