People Before Profit wants open access with few or no limits to University.

TD Paul Murphy is calling for the CAO points system to be scrapped, claiming the Leaving Cert is not a good indication of people's future career abilities.

Deputy Murphy says there are a number of reasons the current system needs to go:

"The immense stress that is put on young people without any relationship to their ability to be a doctor or a lawyer or a nurse or whatever later on in life.

Deputy Murphy continued, "it crystallises educational inequality."

He also said this year's Leaving Cert is a good example of how the system is unfair.

Grade inflation is being reduced to about 5.5%, from 7.5%, as the Covid inflation is being gradually reduced.

Not The Only Way

However, a guidance counsellor says extremely high points totals aren't the only way.

Brian Mooney says there are many other routes into a particular course or industry:

"At the end of the day, if you want to do something I can show you a route into it at 300 points, 400 points, 500 or 600."
