Gardaí are considering using AI cameras.
They could be deployed to track motorists driving in bus lanes, not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone or committing other offences.
The system is expected to cost €100 million, according to an information note published on the Government's procurement website.

A system of AI cameras could soon be helping Roads Policing Gardaí enforce the rules.
Senior Solicitor Barry Scannell anticipates this would require new legislation, just like there is with speed cameras currently.
"If this technology was utilized by the Gardaí, you'd have similar legislative presumptions that the AI was working properly or working, you know, in a non biased matter."
Liam Herrick from the Irish Council for Civil Liberties says it raises important questions around who would have access to that information:.
"...and that could be a disproportionate amount of information, as you'd say."
"It's not just about your number plate, but it might be who's in the car with you where you're going and what your behaviour is. "
CompleteCar.ie editor Shane O'Donoghue explains everything would be double checked by humans:
"So the AI system would flag up a potential incident and the photography, the other data would then be checked by somebody back at base."
There's nothing concrete about implementation at the moment, the procurement note says Gardai are seeking 'views from the market' before making their call.
